I took lessons on how to fly a helicopter, got my commercial certs and started making over $160k a year. I stopped dating, I stopped helping other people, and spent 3 years saving to build a house that was exactly what I wanted. Now, I travel the world for a month at a time twice a year and fuck some of the hottest women I thought I'd never get. I have a couple of nice cars, I have free time to learn languages I want, I am dabbling in engineering now, and I have been building a 69 Camaro on the weekends and enjoying the learning curves of dent removal, painting, rewiring parts, building custom parts, etc.

I think your problem is you are letting your happiness get dictated by those around you, instead of you taking your own life into your hands. Money definitely helped me, but I removed the problems that were limiting my money (women, family, "friends," bills I thought I needed because society told me so, etc) and my life became a whole lot better.

Find something you love that makes good money, and obsess over it till you become a profitable source of happiness in your own life.
