Granted, I don't use Steam with any external drives but I don't quite understand the nature of that issue.
Maybe I'll try later to install some video games with Steam on an USB SSD on my other computer and see what happens.
That being said I'm actually using an NTFS internal drive on my Linux system, which I did have to manually add in fstab and I can add the drive to Steam just fine - shows up in add drive as data2 which is my mount point.
