A bit of vaseline around where the cover is going to be resting helps avoid irritation from friction. Thing is modern cloth diapers are in a different league to the old school ones, it used to be just a big square of cloth folded and pinned on place, which was not a great fit, hence the need for covers. Modern cloth are shaped like disposables and go on with velcro or snaps so they fit just as well as disposables and covers aren't nearly as important.
