Pride doesn't enter into it. I don't like Engage designs. Panette won me over on the strength of her personality, animations, and unit performance. She looks dumb as hell, though. I still can't believe IS approved a Mexican holiday-celebrant character for a Fire Emblem game.
Being prideful in your opinions, always having an axe to grind against a perceived Other - this will cloud your good sense. I strongly dislike 3H's visuals. That's a separate matter.
The fact is, even the dumbest Engage critics have explained what the problem is. But it just goes through your ears, unheard.
Characters are overwrought, overcolorful. It's easy to see how would most designs would be improved with a simple reduction or two, an excision here and there. Why does Panette have eye paint AND mouth stitches AND rainbow tatters AND a giant bow AND bandages? Could *any* of that be lost, while retaining the essential character? I'd say so.
But no one was there to tard-wrangle Pikazo, so everything clashes in a really garish, ugly way. It's nothing like Wind Waker, whose design is cohesive and almost minimal.
There's your in-depth critique. Now can you accept it?
