Russian FSB Agent Charged in Plot to Commit Assassination and Sabotage in Kyiv
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), in a joint operation with the National Police, today announced the arrest of a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent who was allegedly plotting a contract killing and carrying out acts of sabotage in the nation's capital.
According to court documents, the suspect, a 33-year-old military deserter, was recruited by the FSB after seeking illicit employment opportunities online. Following his recruitment, he was dispatched to Kyiv to carry out a series of missions on behalf of the Russian special services.
As a preliminary "test," the agent was allegedly directed to set fire to several vehicles belonging to Ukrainian Defense Forces personnel. His primary mission, however, was to carry out a targeted assassination. To prepare for this, the suspect was tasked with conducting surveillance on a military facility in Kyiv. He rented a nearby apartment and took a job as a food delivery courier to covertly observe the installation's perimeter. Upon completion, he was scheduled to receive the identity of his assassination target.
SBU counterintelligence officers apprehended the agent immediately following an arson attack. A search of his temporary residence uncovered a Makarov pistol with 50 rounds of ammunition, which had been retrieved from an FSB dead drop, along with the mobile phone used to communicate with his handler.
The suspect has been charged with obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Authorities are also considering an additional charge of high treason committed under martial law.
The defendant is currently in custody and is ineligible for bail. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment with forfeiture of all assets.
