Must've been a stay-at-home child that didn't get fixated on anything while staying at home. At least for Max his huge admiration for his dad made him be a Pokemon bookworm, which ironically prepared him better than his sister despite being younger. May at best probably ran errands with her mom but didn't get into Pokemon at all, considering her admiration for her dad isn't passionate unlike Max.
