Ah, I can see what you mean more with this example. That might have to do with the direction of the lighting. It seems to want to make the light source visible on the screen, and the AI doesn't like to put things in front of characters since that blocks them, so inevitably the light source ends up behind or to the side which has that shadowing effect.
I'll keep trying to experiment with different tags and see if anything consistently counteracts it. Your solution of putting "backlighting" in the negatives might be the best bet.
