Duke ignored his detractors and accused them of cowardice - if there was evil to be uprooted, it was their moral imperative to do so, even if they had to risk their lives for it. If one of them had to die to spare the lives of hundreds, potentially thousands of people who would be saved from the dragon's wrath, wouldn't it be worth it?
Slowly but surely, he was able to convince his group to at least investigate the dragon, and his allies agreed on the condition they bring multiple soldiers and mercenaries with them just in case. Due to a lofty connection from the party's archer to the King's distant cousin, they were able to request an entourage of some of the kingdom's best soldiers, and had them sent to their location to unite and pursue the dragon.
They faced substantial challenges in trying to navigate the wilderness - but as they ventured through some mountains, they came across the butchered and mutilated corpses of deer, bears, and other relatively large prey. It culminated in them hearing a loud, screeching roar, and as they pursued it's source they saw the unmistakable silhouette of a dragon flying overhead.
Invigorated to know the rumours were true, Duke followed the lead of the group's better navigators as they travelled in the direction they saw the dragon flying towards. They soon found themselves cresting a hill, who's top had been carved out into a small crater and made into a nest-like landing spot. It was an extremely unusual sort of lair for a dragon, and they suspected that they may have come across another creature's home in the midst of their pursuit.
They were proven wrong shortly after - as they walked on forward past the nest, they felt the Earth shake behind them and the pained screams of some of the soldiers they had brought. Turning around, Duke and his party were greeted with a vicious, blood-mouthed wyvern.
