Russians are going back to old school military stuff because they have very serious military education, almost like how Roman Catholics are with law. Catholics taught their kids law at like 7 and 9 years old so they can grow up and be judges so that Roe v. Wade can die and Catholic rights can be upheld in court. Russians teach their kids war and rifle operation at 7 and then they remember to teach the kid bow and arrow just in case. They have a subculture devoted to that almost like how Catholic schools are separate from regular schools. To a limited extent, it's the Cossacks, but broadly speaking the military families educate their kids in military strategy etc. from a very young age. A 13 year old Russian kid will likely outclass you on strategy because he started learning war before you ever held a gun. They know to make you think they're weak so they can make you underestimate them before they graduate middle school. This is why Russia has always had a sort of air of invincibility: You literally cannot underestimate these people. They will feign defeat, raze Moscow to the ground, and then pretend they're losing before ambushing you randomly and killing over 90% of the Grande Armee and then chasing Napoleon all the way to Paris and conquering France and dividing it into occupation zones just like they did to Germany.
And if you think about it, how do you even fill that many years of martial education without teaching them old stuff? They know the whole history of war from the dawn of man. They go to military college once they finish military kindergarten and all that. Keep in mind your average Russian is probably not in military school but the commanders certainly are raised like this. Ours just do a quick university study and then they're done and become a 2nd lieutenant and work their way up maybe.
