I would argue they lost their way after 10. They've been trying to reinvent the series with each game after FF10 not just the combat but the entire thing, they used to only do one reinvention with 10 that would be the setting but keep the combat relatively the same with small iterations between 4-10 but then they just as you say lost their way.
This is proof to me that even if they release another FF game it won't matter, people are not interested anymore in the series.
People have Exp 33 if they want turnbased classic style jrpg and Stellar blade if they want an action combat game like FF16 tried to be.
