About the Series
Q1:
How did you conceptualize the story?
A:
Before coming up with the actual story, I first created the characters and the world. I placed the characters in various positions and roles to see what would be interesting, adding or subtracting trade-offs. So I came up with the characters first, then the story.
Q2:
Why did you want to draw science fiction?
A:
Compared to「wanting to draw SF」, it was more like「the end result turned into SF」. After my previous series Super Dog Rilenthal ended, I wanted to make a Shonen Jump manga with competition in games and matches as the focus. I originally was going to make a sports manga, but when I was talking to my editor he said「No, you can do more of what you feel like doing. Innovating new things is much more interesting isn't it?」I replied:「Then, let me think about it and try that.」Under another different circumstance, I came up with the concept for a series that had alien technology introduced to Earth, and everyone is able to use it. In Jump, when characters have special powers they are usually「limited to only that person」. I figured it would be interesting if anyone could use the same powers on an equal basis. And I thought it would allow me to include some of the ideas I had for my sports series. And that‘s how it turned into a SF series.
