Well, apparently it’s to avoid eye strain from long exposure to the screen, and to keep our sight "neutral" when doing color sensitive work.
I get the point, but there is a gap between "don’t stare at bright colors on screen for too long" and "let’s put 50% grey in every monitor".
Anyways, Here is a greyer variant of the same pape, to go more unnoticed.
