Mostly poke holes in paper from a distance, but they're also cheap insurance against the slim chance that a criminal tries to victimize me or my family. Pic is a bad example since it's the one gun I own that doesn't really have a direct defensive purpose but it's the only one I have a nice range photo of and it facilitates proficiency.
