Desertion. That wasn’t nearly as bad as outright betrayal, but the distinction would matter much as far as the end result was concerned.
No one leaves the Black Company once they join, not really. It was a tradition that had apparently harked back to the Company’s founding centuries ago, in the pre-gunpowder years on Fallen Earth way back when. Sure it was a little more relaxed now, in an organisation as large and widespread as the Company was in this modern age there was a retirement plan of sorts in the form of SECOM reserves for the permanently injured or old-timers that wanted a little set up somewhere planetside. Those usually came with a cushy low security posting somewhere and enough leeway to basically live out your years as a civilian. But you were still Company, you could still be called up in emergency or for major operations in your respective zones. If you listened to the rumours, there was an entire secret military division in the Company which, among other things, hunted down and retrieved or retired AWOL members. One way or another, the Company was for life.
“Okay. Let’s say that comes up, or we know it’s coming up. What’s the game plan?”

“To be perfectly honest Snake Eyes-sama, my first thought was a shock stick to the back and some voidcracker pills to keep him quiet on the ride out.”

>“Bzzt.” You come up with a secret signal to give Crane when the time comes to definitely defuse this potential Bones situation. You’ll be the distraction, your 2IC will bring the anti-desertion stick and happy drugs. [Daredevil]
>“Not one to mince words, are you? Let’s try talking him down first, if it comes to that.” You’ll give diplomacy a shot first, if it really is looking like Trooper Bones is about to jump ship. Something more direct could burn that bridge with your soldier. [Firebrand]
> “Heh. Funny as that is, we are getting a little ahead of ourselves here. Just keep an eye on him for now, let me know which way the wind is blowing as we get closer to zero hour.” You put a pin in this for now, too much depends on other factors to be putting a contingency in place right now. [Xenophobe]
