If Russia takes all of the Donbass, all of Zaporizhia on their side of the Dnieper, and a good chunk of Sumy and Kharkov. Then they will have reached their territorial goals and would be unwilling to go further with the implications of having to occupy hostile territory and deal with guerrilla warfare.
Sooner or later the Russians are going to want to stop and make a deal to stop the missiles and drones flying towards Moscow. The deal will involve nato having a foot in Ukraine's door in some way.
The west has consistently refused to even contemplate Russia's reasons for the SMO in the first place and have always framed it in terms of territory.
