The country used to be western leaning up till 70's when western sexual freedom caused AIDS and freaked everyone. Then influenced by Iranian revolution the country started becoming conservative with alcohol drinking mostly gone and western culture labelled 'yellow culture' referring to the colour of pus.
That is where the look east policy started as an attempt to create Sunni conservative inspired by Shia revolution and east Asian work ethic.
