Normally I'd suggest spending a night or two playing the old-fashioned way, to acclimate yourself with the UI and general structure of this title. But if you want to see what tanking is like in proper level-capped content straight away, I respect the initiative.
That said, every character on Starscape starts with an insta-skip Scroll (invaluable timesave for raising alts), so don't feel too pressured into sticking with that Lancer if it doesn't end up working out. Tanking is a much more active affair compared to other MMOs, and requires some trial-and-error to see how to respond to different situations/attacks.

Since you've skipped straight to 70, take a gander at server's rentry.org page listed in the OP, and head down to the at the "Quick Starter Guide" found there. It'll get you sorted on what to focus on first, as there is a LOT this game throws at you if you've chosen to skip straight to the level cap.
Also, feel free to toss a Guild Request to Clover once you've acclimated yourself to things. Pretty dead hours at the moment - as expected for an NA server on a school/workday - so it might take a bit for someone to notice 'ya (and I'll be signing-off pretty soon), but having the chance to ask others about things in-game is always better than rolling alone.
