At least Hail doesn’t make some hand-wringing gesture or barefaced lie about keeping an eye out for the new recruit or steer them away from the worst of the fighting. You know your guerilla protégé well enough after these long months fighting together, Hail has never been one for lies or hand-wringing. You’re not the only one that sees it either. Hail’s Red Hand faction is indispensable, but other voices in the war council have spoken out against some of his more extreme measures often and loudly. Even your Lieutenant has advised against one or two particularly drastic proposals, and that’s saying something. Hail has even less patience for half-measures than he does for hand-wringing, not for the first time you wonder if the man who lost everything to slavers would press a rifle into the hands of every grandpa and babe in the refugee camps and point them in the direction of the nearest legion if it meant just one more dead master.
“At least that Obdie-kid’ll get a good feed out of it.” Your poor joke is only half that, the supply situation is leaving everyone lean and the unarmed non-coms are getting the worst of it.
“Not a recruitment point I’ve been pushing lately, given your cooking.” Hail shrugs at your sharp look. “I like it. But you have to admit it’s an acquired taste.”
Voiddamnit, is -everyone- you run into today going to have a dig at your culinary trailblazes? If they can’t handle a little non-lethal venom to spice up the sauce then what are they even living for? These unappreciative jackasses have no idea how hard it is to make tropical venison taste like something other than Voiddamn trail jerky! You’re just about to educate Hail on the benefits of blowfrog extract, from the less-poisonous side obviously, when it comes to expanding one’s palate but Hail changes the subject.
“I’ve something to run by you, after the council meet this eve’.” Hail speaks with a lowered voice, plenty of bustling bodies brush this area in the camp although it’s just you, him and Crane in the immediate vicinity. “Could be a game changer.”
