It's just not a well known story because the right doesn't sit around reading dense post-structuralist or 80s era feminist texts, so they don't know anything. The two big books that lay the groundwork for Queer theory is Judith Butler's The Gender Troubles, and Eve Sedgewick's The Epistomology of the Closet. Both draw HEAVILY on Foucault.

And the funny thing is that the french theories stayed in the acadamies in France, but in USA they became the backbone of the activist class.
