Nah. It wasn't some trick, but a last-ditch effort by communist reformers to save a system which people had stopped believing in by allowing for more freedom of speech. The problem is they fucked it up because it wasn't reformable while also empowering nationalists (whoopsie) who didn't want to be part of the USSR, and the empire shattered. This created a reaction inside Russia ranging from zombiefied Stalinists who considered Pizza Man a traitor to neo-imperial / ultra-right / antisemitic monarchist LARPers and assorted ex-military Rambos (i.e. Strelkov types) who blamed da Joos for the loss of Russian power, and also various schizoid combinations cultivated by their glowies.

You have to be a little careful with 1980s-era defectors, because while it was understandable to hate the USSR, they could also exaggerate its power and internal stability to an audience of right-wing American Cold Warriors who were writing apocalyptic nightmares about Soviet satellite laser weapons. Just playing to the audience. The reality is that international communism was already breaking up in the 1950s and ceasing to inspire, it just wasn't obvious yet to those outside it.

I think you're trying to convince yourself you're still fighting Russian communism because you're a rightist and don't like Russia (don't blame you), and the Russians have spent years working to cultivate allies (quite cynically as well) among rightists in America. And you want to convince them to not like Russia. But the reactionary tradition in Russia is much older than communism. Russia was historically an arch-conservative power... that was also hostile to Europe, which is why the closer you get to Russia the more the guys who wear Thor's hammer necklaces and have 1488 tattooed on their knuckles don't like Russia. America is far away and has a lot of terribly, desperately bored people who can drift towards Orthodoxy as some fantasy like left-wing college students cosplaying as revolutionaries.
