Yeah, I think we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think he originally made the other routes with the intent of alleviating the pain of losing. I think he just really wanted to show the routes. But then felt compelled to show the logical consequences rather than have a memory wipe make it all better, but underestimated how badly readers would take it, even when they had something they could pretend was the true ending.
