These kinds of concepts are great fuel for the imagination, science fiction especially. But if we're talking about understanding the fundamentals of how this fucking mess of a universe works, then you have to operate under positive and negative assumptions simultaneously and typically multiple of each. In this case, we have the positives of "It's real: Chance|God|Phenomenon" and "It's a misinterpretation: Operator-Error|Inadequate-Equipment|Insufficient-Data" and then apply those (or whichever you might think of) to all data going forward and seeing what fits. God is always an option, but it's really just a placeholder for "something is going on that we don't yet understand."
