I haven't been around for that one, but I saw reactions to an episode where show's token red-haired coombait had spent an episode on trying to prove that a newcomer to a house wasn't an imaginary friend, but a freeloader with a fake nose. Over the course of that story her life became hell as she got barred from going to a once-in-a-lifetime music performance and in the end it turned out that the supposed fraud was a genuine imaginary friend who was just trying to conceal his ugly nose with a fake one.
Lauren Faust ended up bombarded with death threats to such an extent that she had to state that this episode shouldn't be treated as canon.
