Russian conscripts killed in Ukrainian border strike, undermining Putin's promises
At least two Russian conscripts were killed and six others wounded in a Ukrainian airstrike just inside the Russian border, according to a new report that directly contradicts President Vladimir Putin's repeated pledges not to deploy draftees to the combat zone.
The independent Russian news outlet ASTRA reports that a Ukrainian attack using five glide bombs struck Russian military positions on June 13 in the village of Novaya Pogoshch, Bryansk region, just two kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
In total, the strike killed two conscripts and one professional soldier, and wounded another seven servicemen, six of whom were draftees. The incident is not isolated. ASTRA also noted that just days earlier, on June 10, an 18-year-old conscript was killed in a separate attack in the same region.
The deaths highlight a persistent reality of the war that the Kremlin has sought to deny. According to ASTRA's tally, at least 217 Russian conscripts have been killed during the full-scale invasion, mostly in the border regions of Belgorod and Kursk, which are subjected to regular Ukrainian fire.
In a March statement, President Putin insisted that conscripts would not be used in the conflict. However, his claim is undermined not only by the mounting death toll but also by admissions from within his own government. In January, the State Duma acknowledged that at least 700 conscripts had been sent to the front lines in Kursk.
Furthermore, reports have been widespread of conscripts and their families facing immense pressure from commanders to sign professional contracts, with some claiming their documents were falsified to show them as volunteers.
