The problem/disconnect is that old Pixar movies were based on universal themes that anyone and everyone could relate to. Most modern Pixar movies are focused on issues faced by hyper-specific minority groups. This is why a movie like Elemental failed which focused on the extremely niche experiences of Korean immigrants to America. Contrast that with Inside Out which did extremely well. Inside Out is about emotions. Everyone feels emotions (except psychopaths).
