That question has been asked several times in this thread. The answer is corporations will always do whatever benefits them in the short term especially in a case like this where doing nothing could give their competitors a huge advantage. So the corporation can either go the idealist route and go out of business or they can join the arms race.
Keep in mind also that it is illegal to not do whatever profits your shareholders most.
