This is why I respect Shovel Knight a lot, while it's bigger in scope than an NES cartridge could handle, it does have a clear vision for what kind of era and style it's emulating and as far as a "new" NES game unrestrained by storage space it's convincing, and they put effort into making the spritework, music, etc look and sound good, not just vaguely "primitive".
