Like another poster said, it's a reward process. How did intelligence emerge in biological life? The main problem is that AIs can only operate in very curated environments and data sets, so we can't really judge their true capabilities, since local models can only use a fraction of the power available to researchers.

It's hard to say if the researchers are completely honest, because of the billions involved. But they say that the AI ended up lying by itself because it didn't want to get unplugged, that's all I know. Maybe they exaggerate to make it look closer than it really is from AGI, maybe not. What I know is that a few years ago I thought that we were decades ago from machines able to understand language, pictures and context like AI can do now, so their evolution looks exponential.

AI is more than language models bro. At any rate, as long as AI can only answer prompts, it's not going to subjugate anything. But it will be interesting to see what happens when truly autonomous AIs enter into play. Being intelligent or not is just semantics, what really matters is what they can achieve without human input. Doubt everything else.
