The numbers are astronomical, and it is a complete waste for Russia, very similar to Afghanistan back in Soviet times, but worse.
He can't back down because making peace now on Ceasefire conditions (Ukraine keeps arming up and will never stop) will not be enough for the absurd losses. But he needs absurd losses to ever overpower Ukraine, so everything else suffers.
