>Unit (approx. number of operators excl. support staff at a given time)

Tier 1: Delta (300-400 operators), DEVGRU (300-400 operators), ISA (100-150)
Tier 2: Rangers (3,200-3,600), SEALS (2,200-2,600), Special Forces (6,000-6,500), MARSOC Raiders (~1,500), AFSOC ST (~2,500)

There are like 180,000 regular marines. Marines are naval infantry, that’s it. Overall the branch is tailored for invasions, bush wars, and otherwise coastal and maritime infantry operations. Because of their reputation as banana republic death squads from the 1890s up to WWII, and their performance against the Japanese during WWII, 80 years on they’re still considered probably the US’s best basic infantry soldier, whether thats true or not anymore I think really depends on specific units and soldiers.
