We're in this mess BECAUSE we've tried annihilating gender roles. All relationships are inherently unequal because women are the sexual selectors. Gender roles for men exist because of women's sexuality and cannot be negotiated. Gender roles for women exist to keep their natural imbalance of power in check, but requires the active maintenance of society unlike the naturally imposed gender role of the male.

Thus, by trying to destroy gender roles, you only truly succeed in destroying gender roles for women while men are still expected to play their role. This essentially means that all power in a relationship belongs to the woman, and all responsibility belongs to the man. The only way to solve this is to bring back and enforce gender roles for women.
