My short answer to your question is that you should work with deities that you resonate deeply with. Different specialists for different needs is reasonable too, but it has to come from a genuine place.

The depth and strength of the connection is really, really important. It's what makes the relationship - and yeah, it is a relationship of sorts - come alive.

As for there being some kind of old divine conflict - I don't know enough of the Kawakatsu clan - Toyoko no Kami beef to make a judgement. I'd be a bit careful, but what exactly is Hata no Kawakatsu's connection to Matarajin is rather mysterious.

I have to say, life cycles and metamorphosis are an excellent starting point. A lot of them are out there to basically facilitate this process.

I sometimes feel like I have stretched myself pretty thin with the attention I can give to each of them, but I like to think that over time people tend to emphasize different people in their lives. I have felt extremely powerful and resonant things with each of them, and I hope to do so in the future too. It really is remarkable when they call back.
