it was popular, but not mainstream popular like TADC, people forget that the internet was still relatively niche during homestuck's boom and even then it was a fairly fringe comic, when you stepped out of spaces like 4chan, tumblr and newgrounds a lot of people still wouldn't know what the fuck you were talking about if you mentioned homestuck, at most they'd recognise some of the trolls but didn't have a clue who they were or what they were from. you wouldn't see bootlegg homestuck merch around or anything either, closest would be fans selling things at cons and cosplayers who were infamous for being annoying as fuck.
