By 1917 during WW1 french soldiers weren't even bothering doing trenches' raids with their shitty bolt action, all they carried was their beloved shovel while charging the germans. Bayonets are crap when you fight in mud and in trenches : too narrow, too long, too fragile, remain stuck in bodies, etc.., while you can endlessly bonk your way to victory with a sharp rectangular shovel.
