Through your education and training, the same way you know today who is a doctor, teacher, construction worker or a janitor.Every Indian was made to get educated in the local village school (Pathashala), Gurukul, and if intersted, in universities like the Nalanda, Takshashila/Taxila, Vikramshila, Vallabhi, etc. Even all the tens of thousands of temples themselves across India weren't just places of worship but centers of education, art, culture, and economy (often functioning as banks). Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra were just broad occupational classes, not hereditary castes.
