Personally I'm under the impression it was "an accident" on paper Ally Sheedy's character is grosser than presented. The intent is to have her appear unhealthy and gross as a reflection of her fear of being genuine and vulnerable, she cleans herself up when she's finally ready to do so. However since she already looks cool and cute, the visual transformation doesn't work it just looks like she's ditching her style for some Emilio dick.
