First I would reduce the four arithmetic operations to one: addition (huh, that's the one you said, interesting...)
Addition: a + b = x
Subtraction: a + (-b) = y
Multiplication: a * b = a + a, repeated b times
Division: a/b = a/1 - b/1 - b/1 = z, until z < a
So now I only need to compare addition to a real world example: particle attraction or quantum entanglement.
It also covers particle with antiparticle interactions which would be symmetrical to the negative values in my previous definitions.

Philosophically I would also like to make a metaphysical claim: the four arithmetic operations exist as mental schemas in my mind. A thought is not less real than a rock. So I could also compare the four arithmetic operations to neural structures and qualia, which to me are the most real thing. I have direct access to my consciousness, but the environment could be an illusion.
