They actually sell a fair amount of merch from what I can tell. Just because there's no market for gacha blind boxes or acrylic stands or plushies over here doesn't mean they don't sell a shitload of those in Japan. For characters that aren't even that front-facing, either. They make Irumyuui merch and Belaf merch and Wazukyan and Vueko merch. They sell little music boxes with Reg and Riko on them. I saw a double-sided mug with Maa's face and ass on it. They certainly sell a fuckload of tee shirts, too, considering I've seen them everywhere from sites like Crunchyroll and playasia to Hot Topic and Wal-Mart. The commemorative editions of the blu-rays are like $200+ dollars everywhere, Barnes and Noble stocks the fancomic anthology and the manga box sets, the Tsukushi Akihito plushie sold out, they have a Switch game, they keeping doing Made In Abyss skins in phone games, the OST itself sells copies on its own, and there was that one Maid In Abyss cafe promo they did like twice.
I don't know if you need Gundam levels of merchandising to make money off of an IP like Made In Abyss. They're probably fine.
