My state, IL, tried recently. Or rather Chicago tried to enforce it's bullshit everywhere again. There was an estimated 1.5% compliance rate, and only turboniggers with 37 other charges are being prosecuted for non-compliance with the ban. The only way it was able to squeeze past the state supreme court was by having a bench composed entirely of judges who's campaigns were personally funded by certified fat fuck Governor Pritzker. I know literally no one who registered guns or magazines for the grandfathering logs. Collectively Illinois realized compliance only makes things worse in the long run, so fuck 'em. What are they going to do? Many of us have stopped trying to comply with any other state gun law as well.
