It's really a fair point. I think that perhaps a great deterrent to WWIII is the disillusionment of the western world. The fragility of US politic is enough that the government is willing to wage cold rather than hot war because a draft would instantly topple in revolution. They're willing to lean on detergents, proxy, and tech/spending superiority on the burden of working people.
