What kind of schools are the "general schools" in the German education system in reality? It seems that these schools are positioned as a preparatory stage for vocational training, but how are students selected to enter them? At the age of 10, it’s natural to assume that children have difficulty deciding themselves what future career they want, so is the parents’ wishes strongly reflected in this process? Or is it simply that students who are not performing well academically are automatically sent to these schools? Latter case, do these schools essentially become gathering places for problematic students or children of immigrants with poor background?
