I firmly believe that Zelda 2 and the Z-targeting invented in Ocarina of Time and the "R to hold shield while strafing" stuff is the direct source material they looked at when making Demon's Souls.
You know that it started from Kings Field which are dungeon-crawlers but they're first person and really primitive mechanically. So making a more action-oriented version of King's Field which then morphed into Demon's Souls they looked elsewhere and found ideas in Ocarina of Time.
When I played Dark Souls II which was my first Souls game, I immedaitely got flashbacks to Ocarina of Time. I can't explain it, but being in Majula, and going to the first forested area where you hear the same Raven cackling sound sample that is used in Zelda, I just immediately felt like it was inspired by Ocarina of Time.
