Clementine is not actually the boy's mom, AJ is the son of two members of a group of survivors she used to be part of, but they died and she's been taking care of him since the day he was born, back when she was 11 years old. By the final game Clem is 16-17 while AJ is 5-6 and she's been raising him to be a ruthless survivor but also tries to find some balance in making him a good person that can be integrated into a community with people, since they've been mostly surviving on the road for years. She acts extremely maternal towards him, she is warm and playful, she teaches him right from wrong, so while it's never explicitly stated, they pretty much see each other as mother and son, just by the way they act.
