Whatever else may be the case there is a reason that people say that Gamergate, having agitated video game nerds from playing their games in peace, ended up getting Trump elected.
It caused widespread awareness of not only what was wrong in videogame journalism but how this corruption was not just a coincidence but came from an organized effort that was being applied in society in general.
It was the general spread of this information online that ultimately lead to people taking action offline (e.g. voting for Trump)

Properly telling people about what these parties are really doing and how they are trying to do it is actually an important part of getting things changed.
