Rito's character was created to be the opposite of Ataru Moroboshi from Urusei Yatsura. To Luv Ru was created as a variation of the Urusei Yatsura story, but the author wanted to make it very different some ways. So instead of being a lecherous womanizer, like Ataru, Rito was created to have a virginal shyness and fear of women.
