It's much easier to love someone and envision them giving you love back when it's an idealized caricature you made in your head. You basically get to dictate the terms of affection. They can't disappoint you. They can't get quiet because of something you said and tell you "nothing's wrong", they can't have ugly parts of themselves that come to light, they can't turn out to be someone other than who you thought they were. You never have to deal with any of that. It's love on your terms and your terms only.
