i go for fish safe to eat so the fee is minimal compared to what i would pay if i bought only a few fish at market
sometimes there are cheaper options like a 3 day license if you just want to fish a weekend / are traveling somewhere you don't live
there are also charters which can be pricey but they provide all the gear usually and you aren't required to have a license when you fish with them
