Many rental companies, including U-Haul have "not for hire" on all their vehicles, and in the terms of the rental contract, you agree that you will not use the truck in a commercial capacity.

Private companies used to put it on their trucks, to say that they were transporting company goods only, and that the truck was not available for hire to carry other loads.
This was not proper usage, whereas they were in fact engaged in commerce, even when they were only transporting goods for their company.
