It’s a fantasy series, in a fantasy world with fantasy elements. A common line used to help people get into the series is that it is “anime WWII”, but I actually think that does it a disservice. If people get sold on the series as just being a standard war story, they are probably going to be more resistant to suspending their disbelief for the fantasy elements.
