the 'thug' part isnt significant imo, nor is calling highwaymen liars and deceivers during a foreign occupation in the 19th century. hardly rabbit hole worthy.

africans have a way better rabbit hole, similar to thugs, but better. they were called the leopard and crocodile 'secret societies'
they would kill their own family members and force the other members to eat them, and the way theyd lure them out to kill them was especially sadistic.
